Newman Printing Company (NPC) considers ecological responsibility a feature of Corporate Citizenship. We try to support our community in various ways because not only is it good business, but because we live here too.
NPC feels that being a good corporate citizen means doing more than just paying our taxes on time. It means helping to enhance the quality of life in the Brazos Valley. Providing direct monetary and in-kind support to the full spectrum of charity, cultural and educational initiatives is a visible and important part of NPC’s commitment.
Not so visible, but just as critical, are the efforts NPC employs to meet our ecological responsibilities.
Commercial printing is a custom manufacturing process. Like all manufacturing, a by-product of printing is waste. NPC is highly efficient in its printing process for the sake of profitability, but we still generate waste. Fortunately, the Texas Natural Resource Conservation Commission (TNRCC
) does not classify our waste streams as hazardous; but they must be properly handled. We generate literally tons of scrape paper and corrugated cardboard a year. Careless dumping of this material would place an unnecessary burden on area landfills and ignore an obvious recycling opportunity. NPC collects and bundles thousands of pounds of paper and cardboard each month for recycling. We see this as good for business and good for the community.
Other significant waste products are leftover ink from the presses, metal offset plates and photographic negatives. Again, these are not considered dangerous if properly disposed of and efficiently recycled. The waste ink is collected, drummed and recycled in a fashion strictly regulated and monitored by TNRCC. The plates and negatives are collected by commercial salvage operations that insure they do not end up in Brazos Valley landfills. In some cases, these recycling efforts pay for themselves. The ink, however, is disposed of at a not insignificant cost to NPC. Here again, we consider all of these operations good for business and good for the community.
Beyond recycling, NPC strives on a daily basis to support the community by properly maintaining our building and grounds. Our plant at 1300 East 29th Street is located in a well establish, conscientiously maintained neighborhood.
When we first opened in that location, Keep Brazos Beautiful recognized our landscaping efforts with an award, of which we still are most proud. NPC is committed to keeping faith with our neighbors by keeping our property clean and attractive.
It may seem like a small thing, but we feel it is part of our duty as a corporate citizen of this community.

Newman Printing Company was the first recipient of the 2003 Texas Commercial Waste GREEN Business Award presented by the Keep Brazos Beautiful Association (link opens a new window)
