FTP Guidelines

Terminology
HTTP stands for Hyper Text Transfer Protocol. FTP stands for File Transfer Protocol. In this context, a "protocol" is a method of transmitting information. Most URL's (Internet addresses) start with HTTP, as in "http://www.cnn.com/"; it simply means that HTTP is used for the transmission of the file. HTTP goes only one way: from the server to the client, from the Internet to your browser (Internet Explorer, Netscape, etc.) But FTP goes "two ways", and allows to "upload" files, from your computer to a remote server.

Files transferred to us through FTP should be compressed.
Compressing files allows smaller sizes, therefore faster transfers, and to upload one file instead of several.
Below, you will find detailed instructions on how to compress files both on Windows® and Macintosh®.
Please note that we have to ask customers using Macintosh computers to compress and BIN-HEX (see below) their files.
For customers using Windows, compression is optional, but more practical to upload multiple files; BinHex encoding doesn't apply.

Compressing Your Files

On Windows

(1) Unless you are running Windows XP, WinZip ® (or an alternative archiving utility) must be installed on your computer; if you are unsure about it, check the C:\Program Files\ folder, and see if it contains a folder called "WinZip".
If it doesn't, download WinZip's free evaluation version from http://www.winzip.com (link opens new window), and install it on your machine.

(2) You must create an archive (*.zip file); right click in a folder or on the desktop, choose "New", and click on "WinZip File", (File Menu > New works as well).
Choose a name for the archive you created.

Multiple File Selection(3) Select the files you want to upload; to select multiple files on Windows:
If they are sequentially ordered: click on the first one in the list, scroll until you are able to see the last file you would like to upload, hold down the Shift key, and click on the last file
If not, hold the Ctrl key down and click on all files you would like to send.
Ctrl+A will select all folders.
WinZip Dialog(4) Open the archive; drag the selected files to the archive, and a dialog will pop up, allowing you to choose various settings.
If you are using Windows XP, and WinZip isn't installed, the files will be added without visual notification; but opening the archive should confirm that the archive contains the files.
We recommend WinZip's default settings; compressing more than the "Normal" preset sometimes corrupts files.

Compressing Your Files

On Macintosh

To compress your files, Stuffit™ must be installed on your computer; if it isn't, you can download it from http://www.aladdinsystems.com (link opens new window).
Stuffit(1) Start the program, create a new archive by clicking the "New Archive" button.
You will be prompted for a file name, the archive will be created on the location you specified, and a folder (the archive) will pop up on the screen.
Simply drag your files to the opened archive.

Create ArchiveBIN HEX Archive
(2) After the files have been dragged to the archive, the compression starts automatically.(3) The archive needs to be "BIN HEX" encoded, to avoid corruption of files during the FTP transfer (upload).

SIT Files
(4) At the end of the process, you should have two files in the folder you initially chose to save the archive in:
The file you should send is the one whose name ends in ".hqx"
The other can be deleted; although you can delete the HQX file after sending it, it might be a good idea to keep it until you get a confirmation that it was received and opened successfully.
